Four dental students of the University of Amsterdam started a dental project on the island Sal. The objective is to outline the dental situation on the island and offer a plan for future care. They carry out dental checks for free on children in schools, in prison, in community centres and in a practice. If necessary, teeth are extracted also for free.
Sal is one of the 22 districts in Cape Verde. It is an expensive island where drinking water is scarce. Sources of income are tourism, a bit of fishing and salt production. A lot of people live in poverty.
